I’m not one for big gifts or grand romantic gestures for Valentine’s Day. That’s just a whole lot of pressure and manufactured sentimentality that I try to avoid. But then again, I DO like the idea of small gifts for Valentine’s Day that let your friends and family know you love them. And while you shouldn’t need a special day for that, it’s nice to have a day dedicated to spreading love.
And what better way to show someone you love them than with a gift card they can use to pamper themselves in some small way? They can spend it when and where they like, and have a treat on you!
My DIY gift card envelope makes a gift card even more special! It looks like a teeny tiny little love letter, but with a gift card tucked inside! I’ve got a tutorial and free sewing pattern for you below.

Made up like a tiny envelope, my love letter envelope is the perfect gift card holder! It’s sized just right to hold a standard gift card. And when the gift card is spent your recipient can repurpose the fabric gift card holder as a little wallet to hold credit cards or paper money.
See my business card wallet tutorial for another quick and scrap-friendly credit card wallet.
And while the details are adorable (if I say so myself), the little fabric envelope is actually quite quick to sew. A few straight lines sewn on the front give the look of an address block, and a little square of fabric appliqued in the corner makes the stamp.
It’s made from two layers of fabric fused together, which gives it body and also keeps the edges from fraying. I used a natural color duck canvas for the outside, paired with bright quilting cottons for a colorful lining. It takes just a few easy seams to sew it up!
A plastic snap is a simple – but cute – closure. (If you don’t have plastic snaps, you can also just use hook and loop tape.)
Love Letter DIY Gift Card Envelope Tutorial
Supplies
Main fabric - Natural canvas duck cloth, 4.5” x 7.25”
Lining - Quilting cotton, 4.5” x 7.25”
Fusible webbing, 4.5” x 7.25”
Tiny fabric scrap for the stamp
Plastic snaps (if you don’t have plastic snaps, you can use hook and loop tape instead)

Prep your pieces
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the main fabric to the lining, wrong sides together, to create a double-sided piece of fused fabric.
Cut the envelope pattern from the fused fabric.
Sew the gift card envelope
Embellish the envelope front as desired. Dashed lines on the pattern show the envelope front and placement for address block lines and stamp applique.
If you’re using hook and loop tape instead of plastic snaps for the closure, go ahead and sew the bumpy side of the hook and loop tape just above the inverted V at the bottom.
Top stitch the bottom close to the edge.
Fold the bottom up, wrong sides together, using the dashed line on the pattern as a guide.
Top stitch around the sides and top close to the edge.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to install the stud half of the snap on the flap. The smooth side of the snap should be on the outside, and the stud on the lining.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions to install the socket half of the snap just below the envelope opening. The socket side of the snap should be on the outside, and the smooth side on the lining.
If you’re using hook and loop tape instead of snaps, sew the soft side of the hook and loop tape to the back of the flap.
Your DIY gift card envelope is done! Put a gift card in there from a favorite spot and you’ve got a sweet little Valentine gift ready to give!
