I might be good at sewing, but I suck at making wreaths. I can’t tie a pretty bow to save my life, and my groupings of flowers and foliage just always seem so forced. And for some reason, every wreath I make looks so dated, like 1997 came by and hung something on my door. I know my friend told me that her children enjoyed making some Children’s embroidery designs. Made me think if her children can do it so can I! I don’t like spending money on pre-made wreaths because wow, have you seen how expensive they are?
But that’s all changed because I just made myself a new wreath for my front door – and I’ve got a tutorial showing how!

I love the fresh, modern look of the muslin pocket in the embroidery hoop frame! The pocket is the perfect size for floral picks or shorter stems. Just line them up in the pocket and you’re good to go!
And because they’re just tucked into the pocket, you can change them out for the different seasons. You can use your Silhouette or Cricut to add a welcoming message to the pocket.
You won’t believe how easy it is to make! And quick – less than an hour start to finish. There’s not even any sewing required!
Make Your Own Embroidery Hoop Pocket Wreath
Supplies:
12” wood embroidery hoop (affiliate link)
Muslin – 2 pieces 18” wide x 9-10” tall with selvage along one long edge. You can cut both pieces from a ½ yard of muslin. Or, if you’re using scraps and don’t have selvage, you can just cut them a little taller and hem them.
Heat Transfer Vinyl (affiliate link) – and a Silhouette or Cricut to cut it
Temporary marking pen
Hot glue gun
Assorted floral picks or short stems cut from an artificial flower bush
How to make it:
First you need to add your greeting or design to the front of the pocket. I think it’s easiest to do this by first marking the shape of the pocket on the muslin so you can make sure you get the design placed how you like.
To mark your pocket, lay one of your muslin pieces out on your work surface, lengthwise and with selvage at the top. Center the embroidery hoop on top of the fabric horizontally and with selvage a little more than halfway up the hoop. Use a temporary marking pen to trace the inside edge of the hoop on to the fabric.
Use your Silhouette or Cricut to cut a design from Heat Transfer Vinyl. Follow manufacturer’s instructions to apply the design to the muslin.
Stack the two muslin pieces, the piece with the Heat Transfer Vinyl design on top. Make sure the selvages are perfectly lined up, as they will be the top edges of your pocket.
Place the stacked fabric pieces in the embroidery hoop using your markings as a placement guide. (I used a Frixion pen to mark my pocket lines so they disappeared as soon as I ironed my design down, but I was able to use the design as a guide for where the markings had been.)
Make sure the fabric is pulled nice and tight in the hoop.
Trim the fabric to ¾” around the edge of the hoop. Wrap the fabric to the back and glue to inside edge of the hoop. You’ll need to glue each layer of fabric separately.
Your embroidery hoop pocket wreath is finished! Arrange some floral picks in the pocket and hang it on your door.
