These modern hexagon fabric coasters are easy to sew and make a stylish place to set your glass.  I’ve got an easy sewing tutorial for you showing how to make them.

There aren’t that many rules in my house, but one of the few that we have is that drinks need to be placed on coasters. Our furniture is by no means fine or expensive, but I still want to keep it protected from water rings from a sweaty drink glass.

Made from solids, these coasters a great way to show off a color palette, like the warm desert hues that seem to be trendy this spring.  I made each of the four coasters in this set in a different hue – mustard yellow, coral, orange, and rust – to create an ombre effect.

Often I make my fabric coasters as a scrapbusting project, but I wanted to go bold with this design – and also simplify and streamline the construction.  I love me some scrappy patchwork like nobody’s business, but I don’t always have the time to sew all those seams.

If you want to use all your small scraps to make coasters, I've also got a tutorial for scrap fabric coasters.

And while I designed my modern hexagon fabric coasters to be two-tone – a neutral and a contrast color for quilting and binding, I realized that they’re also nice turned over to be just solid color coasters.

If solids aren’t your thing, I think they’d also be really cute sewn up from a couple of fabric prints.  Two fat quarters would be enough to make at set of 4, plus give you some scraps left over for other projects.

But probably the thing I like best about these coasters is that they’re super absorbent.  Tucked between the canvas front and the cotton back is a layer cut from an old bath towel. You can use cotton batting if you prefer, but I think the towel is more absorbent – plus it’s a good way to recycle an old worn out towel.

Materials:

Main fabric – quilting cotton or canvas

Backing fabric – quilting cotton

Towel or cotton batting for the interlining

Glue stick

Free pattern

Prep:

The nap on the towel can cause your layers to shift while cutting and layering.  Here’s what I do for more accurate cutting and layering.

First, cut the Front from your main fabric first.  Then, use glue stick to glue it to your towel.  Press with a hot iron to dry the glue.  Cut the towel around the Front hexagon piece.

Cut the Back from the backing fabric.  Center the Front on the Back, wrong sides together.  Use glue stick to glue in place.  Press with a hot iron to dry the glue.

Sew the modern fabric hexagon coaster:

Quilt from point to point across the coaster Front.  You’ll end up stitching 3 lines that intersect in the middle like an asterisk.

Fold one of the edges of the Back over so the raw edge meets the edge of the Front.

Modern Hexagon Fabric Coasters DIY step 2

Fold it over again to bind the raw edge of the Front.  Use glue stick to glue in place, and press with an iron to dry the glue.

Repeat with the next edge of the hexagon.

Continue working around all the sides of the hexagon.

Modern Hexagon Fabric Coasters DIY step 5

Give the whole thing another press with the iron to make sure the glue is good and dry.

Stitch the binding down, close to the folded edge.

Your coaster is finished!
